Biography
Diarra Bousso founded DIARRABLU in Dakar in 2013, after a first career that had nothing to do with fashion. Stanford-educated, she worked as a bond trader on Wall Street before leaving finance to paint and design full-time — training she never fully set aside. Senegalese-born and now splitting her world between Dakar and California, Bousso works as much like a mathematician as a designer. Her grandmother was a leather, ceramics, and metal artisan in Senegal, and that lineage of hands-on craft shapes how Bousso works with local seamstresses and artisans today, building employment within that community as the label grows.
The prints are where her two lives meet: geometric patterns generated using mathematical formulas, translated into the bold color, fluid silhouettes, and structural cuts that define DIARRABLU's resort-ready pieces. Every garment is cut to order and made by artisans across Senegal and India, a model built to minimize waste rather than produce for stock. The brands treats inclusivity as foundational, rather than added on with sizing running from XS to 3X.
That combination has drawn attention beyond Dakar. In 2019, DIARRABLU joined the San Francisco Fashion Incubator, staging a pop-up at Bloomingdale's that included a "Math Lab" activation introducing customers to Bousso's process firsthand. The following year, the brand was named a finalist for Jack Ma's African Business Heroes initiative, recognizing its ties to sustainable development goals across the continent.
