JZO

JZO was founded in Nigeria in August 2014 by Joseph O. Ike and Olamide "Ola" Akindeinde, two friends whose backgrounds — architecture and biochemistry, respectively — had nothing to do with fashion on paper. What they shared was a specific frustration: a sense that Nigerian menswear was boxed into narrow ideas of masculinity, and that traditional silhouettes had more range than the market gave them credit for. JZO started as an answer to that, built specifically around menswear before the label's ambitions widened to include womenswear.

Textile development sits at the center of the practice. Fabrics are produced using locally sourced cotton from northern Nigeria, hand-dyed using techniques including indigo and adire, and finished through collaboration with regional artisans skilled in embroidery and surface work. Pieces are made to order rather than held in bulk stock, and the label has kept pricing deliberately accessible — a choice that runs against the instinct to position craft-driven fashion as inherently premium. The result is clothing where variation in tone and texture reads as intentional rather than incidental, each piece carrying the particular hand that dyed or finished it.

The brand found an early audience beyond Nigeria in February 2015, presenting at Ankara Miami Fashion Week — reportedly the first African-themed fashion show to take place in Florida — a milestone that pushed JZO's contemporary take on native silhouettes toward an international stage. That international visibility deepened further when André Leon Talley featured the brand in his memoir, The Chiffon Trenches, a recognition that placed JZO's work in front of one of fashion's most influential voices. Through its emphasis on craft, storytelling, and identity, the label continues to build a body of work grounded in both experimentation and Nigerian textile tradition.
