Biography
Founded in Johannesburg in 2015, RICH MNISI began as something closer to a personal reckoning than a fashion label — Rich Mnisi's attempt to build a deeper relationship with his Tsonga heritage and translate that connection into design. What started as a creative outlet has grown into a multidisciplinary practice, one less concerned with clothing alone than with unearthing and reinterpreting Africa's stories through Mnisi's own lens.
Duality sits at the center of the work. Across collections and brand experiences alike, RICH MNISI treats opposing forces — old and new, light and dark, the sacred and the profane — not as contradictions to resolve but as tensions that define and ground each other. Each new offering approaches that duality from a different angle, drawing as much from film, music, art, and nature as from fashion itself, and channeled through a design process built around exacting craftsmanship.
That vision was recognized early: Mnisi won AFI's Young Designer of the Year in 2014, propelling the label into national view. In 2020, he was named a joint winner of Vogue Italia's Scouting for Africa initiative, earning the opportunity to present his SS'21 collection at Milan Fashion Week. His work has since been covered by ELLE, WWD, Financial Times Weekend, Vogue China, and Vogue Italia — the latter naming him one of South Africa's foremost emerging designers and pointing to his blend of contemporary fluidity and reverence for the continent's cultural depth.
