Biography
Launched in 2014 by British Nigerian designer Kanyinsola Onalaja and relaunched in 2022, Onalaja is a luxury demi-couture womenswear label born out of a passion for using fashion to elevate traditional forms of African art. The brand's aesthetic is defined by texture clashing, playful proportions, and rich color; each collection of shimmering evening gowns, embellished dresses, and tactile separates places an emphasis on producing tangible interpretations of her heritage, reimagining traditional Nigerian crafting techniques — weaving, hand-embroidery, hand-painting, and hand-printing — through sculptural, heavily embellished silhouettes.
Onalaja graduated with a BA in Fashion Design from Istituto Marangoni and later earned her master's at the Academy of Costume and Fashion in Rome, honing her craft at Christopher Kane and Giles Deacon before launching her own label. That path shows in the work: the sensuality of Italian design and the formality of British fashion sit alongside a reverence for her Nigerian heritage and the female form.
The brand's design language is also shaped by the study of fractals — drawing on Professor Ron Eglash's research into the link between fractal geometry and African design, an influence visible in Onalaja's use of scaling, repetition, and pattern across her surfaces. Every piece is made to order and handcrafted by skilled artisans, a production model built to reduce overproduction while allowing for the extensive hand-beading and embellishment her designs require. Sizing runs XXS to 5XL, inclusivity built into the brand at a structural level rather than offered as an afterthought.
That combination of craft and reach has carried Onalaja into some of the industry's biggest retail spaces, with stockists including Saks Fifth Avenue, Bloomingdale's, Revolve, Zalando, Cult Mia, Polo Avenue, and Curator 13. As Onalaja puts it, the mission is: to celebrate every woman's story, one handcrafted piece at a time.
